Celebrating Leadership and Service in Basketball
North Otago Basketball acknowledges and congratulates former Basketball New Zealand Chief Executive Iain Potter on his appointment as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his outstanding services to sport and health.
Iain’s recognition reflects a lifetime of commitment to basketball and to creating environments where sport can thrive. During his time leading Basketball New Zealand from 2012 to 2021, he helped guide the organisation from financial uncertainty to long-term stability, strengthened national competitions, championed opportunities for women in basketball, and ensured the sport’s history and future were protected. His leadership also contributed to Basketball New Zealand receiving the FIBA President’s Award, recognising its positive influence on the global game.
Beyond basketball, Iain’s career has been defined by service. His work in public health and across rugby reflects the same values that sit at the heart of community sport, leadership, integrity, and a genuine commitment to people.
For us at North Otago Basketball, this honour is a timely reminder of what makes our game strong. Basketball in our region exists and grows because of people who give their time, energy and care without expectation of recognition. Our volunteer committee members, coaches, managers, parents, referees and supporters are the foundation of our association. Like Iain, they show up, they lead, and they work tirelessly behind the scenes to create opportunities for others.
We thank everyone who contributes to basketball in North Otago. Your dedication is valued, your impact is real, and you are the reason our basketball community continues to move forward.
